Recycling Matters

Brand Identity

Campaign Design

UX Design

Recycling Matters is a campaign centered around awareness and education about recycling. Utilizing graphic design to create curiosity and interest in the topic while providing a resource to learn more. The goal is to empower people to take action and help create a collective commitment to recycling to help our environment. I want people to know that recycling doesn't have to be as difficult as it seems, and it does matter.

Recycling Guide Walkthrough

UX Design

Part of the Recycling Matters campaign includes education. The main facet of the education aspect is a prototype for a mobile recycling guide. Since recycling can be a complicated topic, I wanted to make a visual example to follow for ease of use with specific examples broken down into categories.

When you are wondering “Can I recycle this?” the Recycling Matters guide is there for you.

Building the Identity

Brand Identity

The Recycling Matters brand is built to be used across channels through a variety of media and bring a new personality to the recycling community. What typically is considered a complicated—to some boring—topic, bringing a sense of personality creates greater connection and interest in recycling.

The brand combines bright colors and playful characters with education and information about recycling. Each material commonly seen in the recycling stream has its own identity with its character and designated color. Having a color for each character can help categorize information in an otherwise expansive topic. But all together they share the same style, typography, and interest in promoting recycling.

Visual Inspiration

Key ideas included:

  • clean friendly typography

  • type + graphic elements (shapes, illustrations, etc)

  • brighter colors, high contrast,

  • saturation used monochromatically

  • possibly incorporating a “mascot” - a small illustration to give the brand personality

  • a more humorous playful approach

Creating Characters

When creating characters I wanted cartoon versions of items in recycling categories, I chose four to focus on: plastic, metal, glass, and paper. I looked online for inspiration first, then found the items to create outlines based on. After making the outlines, I drew inspiration from cartoon characters I saw online to create the facial features, arms, and legs. Once I had all the elements I brought in a designated color for each character and put it all together.
